Perspectives on Cellular Microscopy

Explore the history of electron microscopy at McGill University through the RCA EMU-2B, the first commercial electron microscope acquired in Canada, exhibited at the Maude Abbott Medical Museum.

The Maude Abbott Medical Museum continues its mission of showcasing research-related collections at McGill University with this off-site deployment: the university acquired the RCA EMU-2B transmission electron microscope (TEM) in the late 1940s, the first commercial model produced by RCA and acquired in Canada, and preserved since by the microbiology department since its replacement by more recent models.

The RCA EME-2B regained its historical importance in this dynamic presentation for which DBD used the plunging perspectives of the heritage Strathcona building and proposed a timeline that traces the history of electron microscopy within McGill University.

Team

Diane Bernier

With a Bachelor's degree in design and a certificate in management, has been working as a designer and museographer since 1989. She has specialized in the design and realization of exhibition projects for a diverse museum and business clientele, and has completed over one hundred exhibition projects to date. Acting as a scenographic designer and project manager, she is involved in all stages of the design process, from the conceptual development of layouts and interactive and multimedia installations, to planning, execution design and spatial implementation.
